Duties &
Responsibilities

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at Harvard Medical School is looking for a Biomedical Informatics Software Analyst. We seek an individual to work on our multidisciplinary team of data scientists, medical doctors, and developers to help with cutting-edge research platforms. Our team studies large and disparate datasets from the domains of biology, healthcare, and social media. The goal of our efforts is to transform healthcare and in doing so usher in a new age of individualized data-driven medicine.

We work in a constantly evolving environment, iterating through prototypes with our experts to create research tools and methods. In this rapid and open space, individuals will be able to exercise creativity in developing solutions to novel problems. Acting as a bridge between the software developers and researchers, this individual will work directly with the research team and product owners to understand their needs and translate them into well documented high-level requirements for the software engineering team.

The negotiation of research team needs will be captured in Google Docs to enable digital collaboration during the discovery process. The Software Analyst will organize in-person meetings when necessary with stakeholders and capture minutes of these meetings in Google Docs. These Google Docs, once agreed upon by main stakeholders will be transferred to pages in our Confluence Wiki to serve as a source of truth for developers.

The prioritization of features and selection for development will be managed by main project stakeholders. Once a feature or change is selected for development, the Software Analyst will capture each testable facet of the feature or change documented on the wiki page as a User Story in Jira including any mock-ups or examples of data inputs and outputs required for a developer to understand the feature or change.

We utilize the same open source code base on all our projects which enables us to benefit many projects with the work we do on any one single project. This makes for a very collaborative and active space with other members of the team. Being part of an open source project means benefits can be seen even beyond our own institution as we foster a strong community with our work.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage internal documentation of requirements for all projects and deliverables
  • Translate requirements into actionable tasks and user stories in JIRA with enough detail to be actionable by software developers
  • Work with software developers to help them understand requirements
  • Validate that implementations meet requirements
  • Write and maintain user documentation for software developed within the lab
  • Organize meetings with stakeholders both internal and external to capture requirements
  • Demonstrate solutions to stakeholders to get feedback as necessary on work in progress and validate that eventual solutions meet the original need

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of combined professional experience working with research informatics systems in a data-driven research environment or working in an IT/Software Engineering environment or similar
  • Minimum 1 years of professional experience working with biomedical research informatics systems in a data-driven research environment
  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience working with the Atlassian Project Management Suite (JIRA/Confluence/etc.)
  • Minimum 1 year of writing technical and user documentation for software systems. An advanced degree may count towards experience

Additional Qualifications

  • FFFFF 4 year college degree in Biology or Engineering preferred
  • Experience with one or more of i2b2, tranSMART, JupyterHub, R-Studio, any business intelligence application
  • Some knowledge of statistical research methods

  • Ability to work in a constantly evolving environment and changing priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a self-starting, nearly autonomous fashion.Ability to work with scientists and researchers in order to understand data structures and requirements
