Duties &

The Sync for Science (S4S - team at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Biomedical Informatics is seeking an experienced front end developer to help build applications in conjunction with the federally funded “All of Us” ( research project. All of Us aims to make medicine more precise by incorporating data on individual’s environmental exposures, lifestyle, genetics and more into the healthcare process. With a goal of enlisting over 1 million participants the project aims to establish a much more accurate and detailed view of the ranges of human health. Sync for Science was established to facilitate this sharing of data with the All of Us program. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is a leading hub for computational biology, translational bioinformatics, and precision medicine. Based on the Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus, the Sync for Science program is part of a vibrant community of scientists, physicians, and engineers whose goal is to advance the boundaries of knowledge. This role will focus on two important tasks

  • Writing code to expand data sharing in the current application to new vendors wishing to participate in All of Us. 
  • Creating new applications that will allow individuals receiving Medicare to contribute their data to All of Us.

The developer will use several standards in the healthcare IT and research industry including the SMART platform and the FHIR protocol in support of these projects. The SMART platform is REST-based, incorporates OAuth2 and related technologies on the security layer and can use JSON and XML serialization formats. FHIR is a standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related field required. 
  • 5 years of related experience in software development required.
  • Experience with Javascript and JSON required.
  • Experience with at least one web framework.
  • Experience in writing quality code: source control, testing, and clear documentation..

Additional Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred.
  • Experience in the healthcare IT space preferred.
  • Experience with the Django framework for Python preferred.
  • Experience with XMI and Java preferred.  
  • Experience using open-source development and tools, can discuss the pros and cons of various web application tool kits.
