Position Description

Are you a molecular biologist who enjoys coding? Are you organized and detail-oriented? Do you like to create resources that will help the scientific community? Would you like to stay in academia but do not wish to work more than the regular hours? We are seeking a Scientific Data Curator to join our team in the Park lab at the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. The Curator will have an opportunity to lead the curation efforts for large cutting-edge genomics data produced by the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network. This NIH initiative, involving the top genome research centers across the country, aims to apply state-of-the-art sequencing technologies and computational tools to detect somatic mutations in all major tissue types in human and study their role in aging and disease. The Scientific Data Curator will be part of the Data Analysis Center (DAC), which collects, curates, and analyzes the data generated by the Network as well as developing and applying novel computational tools. The Curator will act as a liaison between the DAC and the sequencing centers that generate data and manage the metadata necessary to describe the sequencing data generated by the Network. An ideal candidate will have experience with genome sequencing technologies, understand the protocols in relevant experiments, be proficient in coding, and enjoy interacting with other scientists. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is a leading hub for computational biology, translational bioinformatics, and precision medicine, and SMaHT DAC provides a vibrant community of research scientists and software engineers, in an environment that combines the best features of a startup (fast pace, flexibility, flat hierarchies) with those of a leading medical school (excellent benefits, outstanding opportunities for learning, and great resources).

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • A master’s degree in computational fields and 2 years’ experience in data management or curation or PhD in Biology, Physics, Bioinformatics, or a related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge in genetics, bioinformatics or related fields. Experience with modern high-throughput genomics experiments and their data types.
  • Experience with REST APIs, relational databases, software development environments, and version control. Working knowledge of Python.
  • Familiarity with controlled vocabularies and ontologies.
  • Ability to work independently, manage own time and learn quickly.
  • Project management skills including team management, issue management, and change management. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand scientific literature, experimental procedures and their limitations, and current needs of the research community.
