The Center for Computational Biomedicine is a new center within the Harvard Medical School. Our mission is to provide cutting edge computational capabilities, data analysis and to develop and support large data resources in order to accelerate the adoption and integration of new technologies throughout the HMS ecosystem. Areas of application include imaging, genetics, genomics, clinical data, claims and other data sources.
About the Position
Research Scientist is a new academic, non-faculty track recently established at HMS. The candidate will be either Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
We are looking for an individual with a strong track record in the analysis of a broad range of imaging modalities. Within HMS there are many projects involving imaging such as: digital pathology, neuronal imaging, MERFISH, and interpreting video recordings of live animals. The successful candidate will set strategic direction, hire and manage a team to help support different projects and modalities. They will provide high level consulting on data structures, machine learning approaches, storage and compute resources as well as on suitable analytic tools and methods.
There are many imaging technologies used throughout HMS including cryo-EM, confocal microscopy. Advances in imaging technology over the past 5 to 10 years have greatly increased the resolution of images, the sorts of tissues that can be imaged and the ability to probe even at the level of single molecules. This revolution has resulted in the production of large scale data sets with many opportunities for advanced analytics and machine learning to help streamline the process and decrease the analysis time and the hardware constraints.
Analyzing and interpreting these data present substantial methodological challenges including efficient storage and access, computing, segmentation, identification of particular cellular structures, single molecules etc. The successful applicant will be working as a collaborator with different groups within the HMS ecosystem to help identify best practices and concrete solutions to accelerate these activities and push the science forward.
- A PhD and at least 5 years experience in advanced analytics of imaging data.
- A strong track record of producing computational solutions to complex data analytic and computational problems.
- Strong communication skills.
- The ability to manage teams and projects in a dynamic academic environment.
- The ability to engage on a wide variety of problems and provide both high level consulting advice on design as a well as detailed computational suggestions.
- A good understanding of how best to operationalize image processing and ML/AI on large complex images (including live animal video capture).
