The Harvard Medical School Department of Biomedical Informatics is recruiting a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and/or Decision Science for Medicine to join us in transforming medicine and biomedical science.

We seek promising candidates who share our vision and goals for accelerating the transformation of medicine to a data-driven and computationally enabled discipline. Of particular interest are those candidates with experience in machine learning as applied to medicine including the use of conventional clinical and genomic data. Also of interest is experience with decision science as applied to clinical workflow and diagnostic or therapeutic decision making.

In the near future, the state of an individual will be characterized with increasing precision from the molecular, to the organ-system, to the population level, incorporating data modalities that assess the effects of behavior, therapeutics, nutrients, the microbiome, and the environment. The size and complexity of high-dimensional characterization of patients will lead to far more complex diagnostic and prognostic categories than are currently in use, requiring information infrastructure for medical decision making accessible to the individual patient and to entire populations. The multivariate descriptors of large populations will allow stratifications only seen in the most recent genomically-informed clinical trials. Complex, but empirically validated, algorithms will be embedded in electronic health record systems as decision support tools to assist in everyday patient care. Those management algorithms will evolve and be modified continuously based on inputs from ongoing clinical experience and from new research.

Candidates must have a proven quantitative background and must demonstrate substantial innovation and methodological rigor in their approach to scientific inquiry in biomedicine or in the translation of computational methods to engineering/software applications in medicine.

All qualified applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent), postdoctoral experience and an appropriate publication record. Whether developing basic computational methods, modeling molecular mechanisms, or engineering new clinical applications, we expect all successful recruits to share our focus on transforming biomedical science and healthcare delivery. All faculty are expected to contribute substantively to our educational programs through teaching and mentorship.
