Mentor: Griffin Weber, M.D., Ph.D.
Yun William Yu received his PhD in applied mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Professor Bonnie Berger. His doctoral research centered on better understanding the entropic structure of high-dimensional biological data to develop compressive algorithms for storing and searching large databases. Previously, he completed an MPhil in mathematics and an MRes in biomedical physical chemistry from Imperial College London, where he worked on community detection in complex networks, especially as applied to biological systems. At DBMI, Yu is working with Professor Griffin Weber on developing and applying sketching and streaming algorithms to large medical record databases to enable exploratory statistical research while preserving patient privacy.
