Brian Hobbs, MD, MMSc
Brian Hobbs is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Channing Division of Network Medicine. "Genomics of complex disease, specifically interested in rare genetic variants as they relate to a person's susceptibility to developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition to exploring rare genetic variants in COPD, I plan to join a large group of collaborators to use machine learning approaches with both genomic and clinical data to define novel and data-driven subtypes of COPD. The motivation for creating new disease subtypes in COPD is to identify groups of patients with common molecular networks underlying the development and progression of COPD. This patient stratification by pathobiology of disease will theoretically allow researchers to develop COPD therapies targeted to the molecular derangements in these specific patient groups. The field of complex disease genomics requires the organization and manipulation of large sets of data while using many different software tools. A formal training in biomedical informatics will be invaluable to my future research in that it will increase my comfort with a large breadth of biomedical informatics tools and principles."
